My name is Alexander Sewell.  I'm a figure painter from Lynn, MA who's trying to make it in this world.  As an artist,  its pretty easy to become cynical.  You come to believe that what you are doing is the most original,  definitve work around.  You'll see artists with works in magzines and in galleries in great areas,  and you see their work and wonder why they're recognized and you aren't.  While there's nothing more aggrivating than seeing an artist statement about how an artist would doodle at work all day before immediately becoming the next big thing without any training while you work night and day to hone your craft,  one needs to realize that ambition is the enemy of success.  Not to say I hold a defeatist perspective,  I just believe my work speaks for itself,  and if you truley love what you do,  that's all the motivation you'll ever need.  Right now I'm content to sit back with a big smile on my face as my work gets better with each painting I do.  A wise man once said,  find something you love to do,  and you'll never have to work another day in your life.

This website will mostly feature my new series of paintings titled, " Implied Movement ".  I make paintings with a purpose,  they're not just decoration and I will never put anything on a canvas that does not belong there,  the paint must exist with a purpose.  Most paintings incorporate more levity when dealing with female models, showing curves and feminine features in a more curvelinear way.  I work with very solid angles,  while expressing classical beauty with a much more contemporary method of painting.  The fact that I work with very solid angles and my movement throughout the canvas as the painting progresses shows and implied movement or shift in the model's body.  I'll weigh certain body parts back with paint and let the drawing underneath bring the opposite parts to life.   I'll also follow muscle contours very closely and use the space created through the process of painting to make a rotation seem very dimensional,  and stay away from conventional means of optical illusion.  I work from the ground,  and have the model stand on the canvas itself as I move around the model,  skewing perspective as I go.  This creates a buildup of dirt and wear that combined with invisible lines of direction and actual graphite sletching makes a space for the figure to exist in,  creating a very odd three dimensional quality while remaining very much so 2-D.  My titles are derived from boxing terminology,  which is a nod to a struggle to improve upon my main influence,  Euen Uglow.

I'm always looking to book a new show or participate in a group event.  If you enjoy my prose and you like what you see,  feel free to contact me at actualyalexander@aim.com
